Keep in Step

Dr Alex Tang

The Boy’s Brigade motto is ‘sure and stedfast’. I am impressed by the high standard of drill demonstrated today by the various platoons. Drills are important because it demands of us, discipline and teamwork. It is not easy to move smoothly and with coordination a large number of people.

Look at a herd of sheep. You may be able to get them together to move in one direction and farmers in Australia use sheep dogs to do that. The sheep dogs will herd the sheep but the sheep will never to able to march in the precise and  coordinated manner you did today. They will be tripping over each other, running into each other and making a lot of noise. A herd of sheep do not have teamwork.

An emperor of China decided to see whether his people can work with each other. Whether they have team work. So he issued a decree that everybody can only eat with a 4 feet long chopsticks. They are not allowed to eat with their hands. The decree must be obeyed on the pain of death. After six months, the emperor wondered what is happening to his people. So he sent out his great captain to see what is happening. The first village he visited, the people were starving. They have a lot of food on the table. But with the long chopstick, they could not get the food into their mouths. The captain went on and he see the same in many villages. The people were starving and dying, even though there was an abundance of food. Then one day, he came upon a village that is happy and well fed. He asked the people, “How is it that you are happy and well fed when all the other people is starving?”  The villagers smiled and said, “ When we first try to eat with the long chopsticks, we just cannot get food into our mouth. But one day we decided to feed each other”. That’s is team-work. Team-work is working together – whether you feed each other, or marching together in drill, or in your badge work or in your studies in school. We need each other. To succeed in any enterprise, we must work together with teamwork.

Even Jesus Christ has a team. His team is composed of 12 men called disciples. And he told them, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of  the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all I have commanded you and lo, I shall with you, even all the end of the age”.
